On Other Religions
"It granted me considerable happiness to receive letters from students
saying their faith in Christ had been strengthened." —G.V. Desani
On Religious Texts…
The scripture of any religion must be understood by contemplating it. One must it read again and again until meaning arises.
Any doctrine leading to the stilling of passions, charity, wisdom, understanding, compassion, solitude, etc. is a worthy one.
Founders of religion have a touch of something the followers have not found.
On Hinduism…
Kali, tantric yoga … a terrible form. What is the idea of suggesting such a form of God? Because God swallows us all. Death is inevitable. Everything is destined to die. Everything gets sucked in. Nothing survives.
Indian traditions call for relentless self-improvement and procedures. Anything that is true, benevolent, beautiful must be pursued.
On Christianity…
There is a devil of a difference between professing and practicing Christianity.
It granted me considerable happiness to receive letters from students saying their faith in Christ had been strengthened.
The more goodness there is in you, the more you will indict yourself. Meaning of great beings who suffer for others.
In different traditions death is a kind of crisis … Christian, Judiasm. But in our tradition it is just an event.
On Ethics…
Any practice which does not take ethics into account is a false one.
Teacher must be without self-interest. Cannot have normal relations with such people – sex or other. (Of a teacher who has sexual relations with a student: "These people came to him for spiritual guidance – an unforgivable act on his part.")
One should get on very good terms with the Lord within.
On Turning Away…
Turning away involves withdrawal of attention from the world. It has nothing to do with intellectual logical processes.
Turning away is not a form of escape: it is getting into the suffering … to know it truly.
On Spirtual Fulfillment…
Supermundate enlightened men all find the same truth.
Spiritual knowledge gives truth and refutes error.
Any truth, including the ultimate truth, must be found by the individual himself.
